Reef Fish Species

If you are looking for information about commonly and not so commonly kept reef fish species, you have come to the right place.

As always when it comes to fish keeping, it is important to research any species you wish to add to your setup. Not only do you need to find out if the environment is suitable for the new species – you also need to know how it will get along with other tank inhabitants. Some reef fish can for instance be highly aggressive towards other members of its own species, while having no problem at all cohabiting with fish from other species. Others will eat or bully any animal smaller than themselves, and need to be kept with sturdy tank mates capable of fending off any attacks.

It is also important to find out in advance what the fish wants to eat. Two species of reef fish from the same reef can have widely different nutritional requirements and even though they might accept the same food in captivity it can prove detrimental to their health in the long run.

Some reef fish species listed on Reef Aquarium are not recommended for beginners. The Fu Manchu Lionfish and the Volitan Lionfish are for instance equipped with venomous spines on the elongated dorsal fin and being stung can be a very painful experience. For people allergic to the venom, it can even be dangerous. As a beginner, you probably have enough to worry about when it comes to proper marine tank management without adding venomous fish to the mix. This is just one of the many reasons why obtaining comprehensive information about fish species in advance is such an important aspect of being an aquarist.
